Kingsley Moghalu is the Founder, Convener and Chair of the Board of Trustees of To Build a Nation (TBAN). He is a global leader who has made transformative impact across several domains including academia, central banking, economic and financial policy, development, law, international diplomacy, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. He was a competitive candidate for the Office of the President of Nigeria in the 2019 elections whose visionary and policy-driven candidacy challenged the status quo and altered the political narrative in Africa’s most populous country, impact recognized by the West African Federation of Freelance Journalists’ “Nigerian Political Icon of the Year 2019” Award to Kingsley Moghalu.
Kingsley previously served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (2009-2014) where he led the execution of high-impact reforms in Nigeria’s financial sector after the global financial crisis, and subsequently as Professor of Practice in International Business and Public Policy at Tufts University’s prestigious Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, one of the world’s top-ranked graduate schools of international affairs, in Massachusetts, USA.
He previously worked for the United Nations for 17 years in legal affairs, strategic planning and executive management roles at the UN Headquarters in New York and duty stations in Cambodia, Croatia, Tanzania and Switzerland, rising from entry-level officer to the highest career bracket of Director. In 2006 he served as a member of the high-level Redesign Panel on the United Nations Internal Justice System appointed by Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the request of a resolution by the UN General Assembly, at the level of Under-Secretary-General. Moghalu later founded Sogato Strategies S.A., a global strategy and risk management advisory firm in Geneva, Switzerland. In 2017 the Governing Board of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Trade and Development Board, appointed Kingsley a member of its high-level UNCTAD Intergovernmental Expert Group on Financing for Development, tasked with devising ways to improve domestic resource mobilization for development in developing countries, and on how to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Kingsley Moghalu was educated at the London School of Economics and Political Science where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree, The Fletcher School at Tufts University (M.A.), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (LL.B.) and the UK Institute of Risk Management. He also is an alumnus of executive education programs at Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Wharton, IMD, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Institute. He is the author of four books including Build, Innovate and Grow and Emerging Africa: How the Global Economy’s Last Frontier Can Prosper and Matter. Kingsley Moghalu’s opinion commentary has appeared in global journals including the Financial Times, Yale Global, USA Today, and the South China Morning Post, and he has been interviewed frequently on CNN Television, BBC World TV, and Bloomberg TV.
** In October 2019 Kingsley Moghalu resigned his membership of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), the political party platform on which he ran for President, in order to convene TBAN on a non-partisan basis, and is not presently a member of any political party in Nigeria.
